7/11/09 - Sheffield Tournament

We took our first and second teams to Sheffield Tournament, with a reputation of being a competition of a high standard we knew it wasn’t going to be easy! But with Sam Hill’s usual supply of red bull and some good old Man uni spirit we were up for the challenge!

Playing on the smallest korfball courts ever, the firsts team took a knock in their first game losing to Leeds uni, However with a 6-0 win against Hallam with goals from Amy, Joe, Dave and Rob and a sneaky one from Annie (with a little help from a rocking post..) that just cannot go untold, the first team were back in it!

The seconds started off well, beating Birmingham 2-0 with 2 goals from Stacey McKenna, which really set the tone for the tournament. Despite losing the next game against UEA (in which Will Rhodes scored a nicely taken consolation penalty) we won our final game in the group stage against a competitive scratch team.

During the group stages, with some damn good Korfball played by everyone involve, both our teams were in the top half!

Seconds

We were extremely unlucky in the next two games against Cardiff and Lancaster, losing both 2-1 despite being the better team and placing them under extreme pressure towards the end. In the final game, we got the reward our hard work had warranted, by defending brilliantly and winning with relative ease, the team finished a very respectable 7th.

Everyone genuinely played well, with Oli getting some great goals in, but special mention should go to Stacey, who’s performance earnt her a place on the subs bench for the 1st team in the final, and if the match was 5 minutes longer she would’ve made her debut!

Firsts

After beating Lancaster 1-0 the firsts were in the semi finals and letting ourselves get rather (VERY) excited! After a team talk in which Coach Kev reminded us all that Amy likes it from behind (the post - what were you thinking!? tut tut) we stormed into the final beating Cardiff 3-1! Now we were in the final. With some carefully timed drinking of red bull by Annie, Becky and Joe we were ready!!

We gave it our all with some very fast and classy korf by everyone, but an extremely strong snakebite team grabbed that elusive top spot in the end. But 2nd place and best uni team in the competition!? Yes please!

21/10/09 - Keele Tournament

MUKC sent 9 lucky players to the Keele tournament, being driven there by the lovely Thom Partridge. This was the first time we’d been to this tournie so there was an air of excitement in the minibus.

Defeats from Castle (who won the tournament), Crewe and Leeds didn’t start the morning session very well… and with Sammi having already racked up 9 penalty (drinking) shots it wasn’t looking too good.

However after lunch we had a real turnaround. With only one loss in the afternoon, we managed to finish a respectable 9th.

A big shout out to Phillipa Brown (P. Galore) for being chosen as the most improved player of the day!

17/10/09 - Lancaster Tournament

Two korfball teams, made up of mostly beginners went to play at the tournament in Lancaster.

Out of 12 teams there, our teams came 5th and 11th.

The team that came 5th only lost to the two teams that were in the final, which was an excellent result overall!

All of the beginners played really well, with Woman of the Match going to Rachel who scored 9 goals over the day!

Failure of the day goes to Rob Samm who missed every penalty he took.

Those who ended up playing for Warriors on the day, as they didn’t have enough players, were all awarded winners medals, so well done Marnie, Rachel and Kiko, as well as our very own coach Kev!

So a great day was had all round, with all the beginners learning some more valuable korf skills.
